What is Peer Mediation?
Peer mediation in schools in the resolution of disputes or conflicts, arguments or bullying, by the use of mediators from the students in that school. The solutions are those worked out by those in conflict with the assistance of peer mediators.
Peer mediators, some as young as six or seven, are trained in the necessary skills and diplomacy by teams of adults and children who are already involved. The strongest input comes form the peer mediators themselves. They have learned to listen, not to make matters worse, and to help those in conflict understand their mutual interests.
Mutual Solutions
In this way mutual solutions emerge - often very quickly - that are devised and owned by those with the dispute. They tend to be wise and durable. They are expressed in the language everyone uses and based on local needs and individual customs. It is an obvious and remarkably effective process.
